I knew a fellow who had been to Bahrain. His visit was well over 10 years ago, but I still remember him going on and on about this Marguerita he had a a place called "Paco's". Even with Bahrain being a Muslim country, you could still get alcohol.

Bahrain sounded like a liberal place. Maybe not as Euro-centric as Turkey, but definitely a step above countries where Sharia is the law of the land.

I have always had one burning question, though. How does it treat non-Muslim Women?

If I were to travel to Bahrain on my own, would I have to don the Burqa and Hajib to shop? Would I be allowed to drive my own rental car?

Of coz you are allowed to drive in Bahrain. Bahrain women are far free than women in Saudi Arabia, who are not allowed even to drive. By the way, what does the "don the Burqa and Hajib" mean?

Bahrain is one of the most liberal of all middle eastern countries, treatment of women in bahrain is subjective, it kinda depends on the family where the husband/wife grew up in and how open/liberal/conservative the family is, but they always stick to themselves and to their own affairs.

But Bahraini women face social problems, like the inability to begin divorce proceedings without considerable difficulty.

I was asking if women have to be completely covered as they must be in other Muslim countries.

A woman can do anything a man does in Bahrain. Women do not have to ware hijab and can drive a car and work wherever she likes.
