Good thread Josh... this kind of places that we are interested to visit in.. hehe..
photo as shown is Bahrain's 123-METRE high water fountain in the sea off Al Fateh corniche, north of Juffair coast, Manama.

anyway... info gathered as below regarding the 123-Metre Water Fountain:

"The fountain, which is similar in height to the renowned Jet D'Eau in Geneva, has a main jet that will spray more than 285,969 gallons of water per hour at an exit velocity of 142mph, and 40 smaller jets providing a ring of water about eight metres high surrounding the main jet.

Its mechanism is contained in a barge, securely anchored to the seabed with several very heavy anchors measuring 132.25 metres and weighing 300 tonnes and brought to Bahrain on board a special heavy lift ship.

Two powerful pumps are used to deliver water through a nozzle especially designed to achieve the desired height.

Operation of the fountain is automatic and includes a control system that will limit operation in case of adverse sea conditions of high winds. - info of Gulf Daily News"

It is an incredible fountain in Manama. Most foreigners get astonished by this high fountain in Manama with its sheer size and height and that too in the center of the desert.

The fountain shoot-up sure look like the building of BWTC. It was a nice view and moment if I can get the chance to be there. Have to get a better camera to get such a good shots.

Yes, it really is a spectacular sight, and yes, it really is as high as the photos show. It’s not a fake. But maybe someone can explain why it was shut off for over a year without warning or information...typical for how things work in Bahrain, though. It was installed a few years ago (2005??) with only rumours on who runs it or why it was placed where it was placed. There has been some controversy over where it is because there may be a bridge placed between Juffair and the area near the Marina Club one day and if so then the fountain is right in the way of the proposed bridge.

And as to WHEN it works – that is really a mystery. Today was a nice calm-wind, cloudless day (this really is THE best time of the year here!) yet it was not working for most of the day. It has been working (spectacularly) on and off over the past few months since November or so of 2008, but right now it is OFF. Some days / evenings it is off totally and other days / evenings it works pretty spectacularly. No rhyme or reason to when it works.

The suggestion (information?) about it shutting down during inclement weather might be true but if it shuts down on a beautiful day with no reason, maybe it’s because of the automatic weather-thingy on it being dusty and not cleaned ever?? Hehehe...
(The reason I say that is stuff is built here but then gets hardly maintained. Not a lie but an observation after having lived here many years.)
