Bahrain has around 707,000 inhabitants, including 269,000 foreigners, most of whom are from Asia and are employed as domestic help.

The lack of comprehensive legislation on foreign workers in the Gulf Arab states means Asian maids often face physical abuse, sexual harassment, rape, non-payment or delay in payment of salary and overly long hours.

Kingdom of Bahrain Ministry of Labour have launching a new and dynamic site on 18/12/2008 for everyone to access the new services and information. Even we can also view the Legislation -> Labour Law whether through site or pdf for the list of "The Labour Law for the Private Sector".

Wow those are some powerful statistics that I never knew. I guess there is some sort of corruption in Bahrain, but I never knew that Bahrain needed that much assistance with its' neighboring countries like Asia.

maybe its because the amount of conversion in bahrain is so high, i've seen on television and in the internet the harassment's of the workers, i can't imagine about working in other countries and experience like this, so sad plus the salaries are delayed sometimes not really being paid. guess this problem is happening with the other countries too. that's why the law should be that firm to implement justice to those poor workers being maltreated.

Thats a high amount of foreigner working at Bahrain, and regarding the abuse or harrassment, I really do hope that, they would treat maid like a human too, cos they try to work hard to earn some income to survive and support their family at homes.

Although sexual harassment is prohibited in Bahrain it remains a widespread problem for women, especially women migrant domestic workers and those working in other low level service jobs.

Even all these cases were reported, but however most of the victims were too scared to sue their employers although they had the right to do so.

whether it is a low level service job, they also have the right to be treated nicely. i agree too that those being abused are hesitant to speak up because they are being threat and being deported back to their country.

So how is the government dealing with these issues? I understand matters such as this is almost true and same for other gulf states.
